VivaTech: ESTACA Shares Its Expertise on the Potential of AI for Sustainable Mobility

25 June 2026

During the VivaTech trade show—a must-attend event for innovation in Europe—BPI France asked faculty members and researchers at ESTACA to organize a roundtable discussion focused on the challenges of artificial intelligence in transportation. At the same time, students in the “Vehicles, Autonomous and Connected Systems” apprenticeship program explored the show’s exhibits.

Artificial Intelligence for More Sustainable Mobility

ESTACA’s faculty members, who are part of BPI France’s network of experts, organized a roundtable discussion focused on the challenges of artificial intelligence in transportation. Titled “AI and Mobility: Can Energy Efficiency Be Programmed?”, this session explored the potential of AI to design more fuel-efficient, high-performance, and sustainable mobility systems.

The roundtable brought together:

  • Bertrand Barbedette, faculty member and researcher in charge of research commercialization at ESTACA’Lab and BPI France mobility expert,
  • Vincent Judalet, faculty member and researcher and ESTACA’Lab smart mobility expert,
  • Olivier Orfila, Scientific Director of VEDECOM.

The speakers examined the ambivalent role of artificial intelligence in mobility systems: a tool for optimization and efficiency, but also a source of growing environmental impacts (energy, CO₂, water). Through an interdisciplinary approach combining mobility and generative AI, the possibility of integrating principles of sustainability into algorithms is a goal to be optimized while balancing key challenges such as data ownership, system security, and effects on usage.

The speakers highlighted the scientific, technological, and ethical challenges associated with deploying these solutions.

Through its research and innovation activities, ESTACA actively contributes to the development of more sustainable mobility solutions.

Future mobility experts encounter the innovations of tomorro

At the same time, about twenty future engineers from the “Vehicles, Autonomous and Connected Systems” apprenticeship program were invited to the VivaTech trade show to discover current and upcoming innovations

As they train in technologies that will make vehicles smarter, safer, more autonomous, and more connected, the students were able to explore the sector’s latest technological advances, engage with major industry players, and gain a better understanding of the challenges that will shape the transportation of tomorrow.
