Innovating for Tomorrow’s Ships

29 January 2026

Choosing the shipping program means choosing to work in a constantly evolving sector, rich in technological challenges and development opportunities. Being a naval engineer means working on diversification and energy management, innovative propulsion systems, comfort, air quality, digitalisation, intelligent and autonomous ships, ocean depollution and the ship building supply chain.

In all these areas, engineers play an essential role in facing the many challenges: they conduct ambitious projects in both design and production, organize and lead teams, develop surface and underwater vehicles of all sizes, and help to improve the environmental impact.

Albane, a 5th-year student in shipping, specializing in “architecture and sustainable engineering for the shipping sector”, explains:

“When I arrived at ESTACA I had no knowledge of the shipping sector. I’ve always loved the ocean and I was able to imagine myself quite well in this industry. I’d like to work in shipping to give meaning to my future missions and be of use to society. Environmental issues are particularly close to my heart, and there are many in the shipping sector. I’m particularly interested in research and development, especially in the preliminary design phases. I really enjoy tank trials, which help to validate technical choices which are essential in ship design. I discovered this aspect during my 3rd year internship at HSVA in Germany, and I really enjoyed it. At ESTACA, theoretical training is solid and can be applied directly in the workplace. The courses are practical and field-oriented. I love the projects carried out in small groups: we work on real-life issues, such as designing a ship and analyzing its behavior in different situations. ESTACA has a very close relationship with companies. The professional lecturers are passionate, available and highly committed. We’ve been lucky to do a number of visits, with some incredible experiences that give you a real insight into the industry. The shipping program offers a wide range of opportunities”.
