As the Aerospace industry evolves, so does ESTACA training

2 July 2024

The aerospace sector has undergone profound change with the emergence of NewSpace and is continuing to grow to meet the challenges of data collection, processing and use. Training in the aerospace industry is constantly evolving to meet these new challenges.

NewSpace is changing the industry

A few years ago, working in the aerospace industry often meant working for governments or public institutions, such as NASA, ESA (European Space Agency), CNES (Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales), ONERA or very large international groups (Airbus Defence & Space, MBDA, etc.). Today, a new industrial sector has developed with the arrival of private companies interested in the economic spin-offs of space: NewSpace. The goal is no longer simply to observe the Earth or launch satellites for weather forecasts, but to conquer new horizons, for example with space tourism, the conquest of Mars or mining mineral resources on asteroids… The space industry is now home to start-ups and large commercial companies that are recruiting a large number of engineers. Among the best-known are the Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin rocket for space tourism, and Elon Musk’s SpaceX (founder of Tesla), which has developed its own space launchers with the ambition of going to Mars and, why not, colonizing space.

NewSpace is also characterized by a growing number of technological exchanges with other sectors. Innovations in digital technology, Big Data and aeronautics, for example, are feeding into aerospace technologies. Today’s challenges include data collection, processing and use: worldwide communications, navigation systems, both for the general public and for the defense sector.
Today, the aerospace market is mainly occupied by operators and suppliers of satellites and services. An average of 2,400 satellites will be launched every year from now until the year 2031.

Today, many young graduates from the ESTACA aerospace program are working in NewSpace companies. For example, Chloé Pasquier, a 2022 graduate, was hired by RIDE! after completing her internship there. Space, a start-up that aims to facilitate access to Space with a matching algorithm.
