17 year of profitable collaboration between ESTACA and UAH!

Michaël P.J. Benfield and Matt W. Turner, Professors Engineer Program at UAH

“This year we are launching our 17th common project in applied research with ESTACA, and we are still convinced of the interest of our students. Every year about thirty students from University of Alabama in Huntsville join ESTACA students to collaborate on an applied research project called Integrated Product Team (IPT). Several binational teams are made in order to work on the same technical specifications given by a company, usually the NASA. After several months of teleworking, each team proposes a solution in front of a jury composed of industry professionals. The best proposal is rewarded. This year’s project, proposed by the NASA, is a mission to Europa, Jupiter’ satellite. We are going to associate 24 ESTACA students to the project.

This kind of international collaboration is really educative for our students. We both had a career as engineers before starting teaching at UAH. We noticed that the main difficulty for engineering students is not technical but more linked to coordination, communication and language. With this IPT project, the students face all these difficulties: how to manage cultural differences, language problems, teleworking with time difference, deadlines, etc. We note that the students taking part in those projects blend more rapidly in the business world. ESTACA’ students also seem to appreciate this collaboration. Regularly, some ESTACA students come back for an exchange semester at UAH after this experience. Some of them continue with a PhD in the USA. One of our alumni has become a lecturer at Purdue University!”

“After one semester at Hambourg University, we decided during our 4th year at ESTACA to prepare a double degree in the USA. We wanted to get self-enrichment, as well as enhance our resume. The international department guided us in our project, and today we are doing our MBA at Embry-Riddle University in the USA considered as « the Harvard of the sky ».

International experiences help to determine our personality. Learning to collaborate with persons from different cultures is enriching and essential to join an international company.”

Guanting SU, Student from “Beihang University” (China)

guanting su webAt first I chose France as an ideal country for a study-abroad experience because this country is quite advanced in the field of aviation. Another thing that attracted me to ESTACA was its AAD program.

I had always wanted to train my skills with computers as it plays a more and more important role in modern industry. So AAD (Automotive & Aeronautics Design) was just what I want! I definitely have spent a great time during these four months. The AAD program has expanded my knowledge and practical skills on CFD, FEM and so on. It has also provided me with a chance to know more about different characteristics of the engineering education system in France, which pays more attention on standardization, replaceable personnel, etc.

After my stay in France, I gained a wider view of my professional field and now I know in which specific field I should work harder to gain expertise. The best ‘souvenir’ would be those beautiful pictures, valuable documents and above all, a beautiful memory of what ESTACA has done for me.

Hilda Lorena Rodriguez Pulido, Student from Tecnologico de Monterrey University (Mexico)

I chose this program because ESTACA has a lot of mentions of its level of expertise in the field of transportation. It also allowed me to practice my English while learning French and gave me an opportunity to live in Paris. In addition, the AAD (Automotive & Aeronautics Design) program sounded promising, offering a large toolkit of softwares which are currently used in the industrial world.

It was a splendid experience, of which I enjoyed every single moment. Collaborating with teachers and students of other nationalities and cultures has opened my ‘panorama’. The professional project I developed at ESTACA gave me a clear idea on how to solve problems with research skills. And all the tools will help me to learn more easily any computational tool that my future job will require me to master.

Undoubtedly, the educational experience was the best! Teaching methods are very different from those used in my country. I am now open to new ways of learning and doing ! I will certainly recommend this program.

Prabal COUNTCHAM, student in the 0peration and Maintenance program

prabal temoignage webA master which provides you with the knowledge and skills required to be directly operational!

I decided to join the “0peration and Maintenance” program to get an overall view of the air transportation field, in the respect of international regulations and maintenance issues. I really appreciate the quality of the lectures and the aerospace background of all professors. They shared a lot of interesting work experiences and anecdotes with us, which gave a professional dimension to this course. During the year, we did several group projects with the support of experts working in a specific domain.

My main project was to estimate the cost of an aircraft dismantling operation, supervised by an MRO (Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul) organization. I could study the regulations, standards andprocess in depth, also taking into consideration the economic point of view. That was really interesting, and I this experience is a project I could potentially be asked to do during my first job! I warmly encourage people who want to work in the air operation and aircrafts maintenance to apply for this master.
